Bangkok Bus: The inns' and outs' of Traveling to Bangkok by bus
Traveling by Bangkok bus is becoming more and more common. The Thailand bus system services every city and town in Thailand. The Thailand bus system is broken into two systems the government and private owner. Once you arrive at one of the bus terminals you will see signs in English and in Thai for each area of destination. Each destination can be serviced by the government and the private owner. Unfortunately although they try there best not each ticketing agent will be able to speak a second language so you will have to mostly rely on the signs to give you the information for the destination you would like to reach. Fortunately the signs are clearly marked with the times of departure and the destination point.
The first time you use the Thailand bus system it is a good idea to arrive early to get familiar with the companies and the areas being service by the government and the private owner. As with any country when you are touring around there will always be some degree of miscommunication so it is best when you arrive early to the bus terminal to find the different companies offering the destinations you are trying to reach. As a Note: the private owners are competing for your business so each private owner's bus can be very much different from the others in the amount of comfort they provide please see our guide below for some things to look for when using a private company. Once you have located the companies servicing your destination a few questions you should ask are:
1. If the bus is air conditioned?
2. Is the bus “Tour”?
3. Is it a direct root?
4. What terminal number the bus is at?
The answers you are looking for are:
1. Yes the bus has A/C
2. Yes it is “Tour” (In Thailand the buses that are called “Tour” are the buses that make less stops, so you should use this same word).
3. It makes 5 stops. (Unless it is a privately rented bus all of the buses make stops but it depends on each company to determine how many stops they will make)(You are looking for a bus that makes 5 to 8 stops in which is not many because each stop is en route.)
4. After you find out which terminal the bus is in you should go and inspect the bus to see if it meets your requirements for travel. Remember each company offers different kinds of comforts.
The Thailand bus system is a good system if you would like to see the scenic side of Thailand or travel to Bangkok by bus from an outer destination contact us and we will arrange everything for you with a clearly marked itinerary.
To give you the highest degree of information we have designed for you a quick reference guide on the two systems with contact information.
Bangkok Bus Government terminal service:
There are 3 Bangkok bus terminals. Each of the three Bangkok bus terminals belongs to the Thai government. Each terminal services the 3 directions which consist of the Northern & Northeastern, the Southern, and The Eastern.
The bus line that provides service for each terminal is owned by the government and the private companies. The government bus companies get concession from the government. Most of the private buses will run from one province to another with stops in-between. The frequency of the bus may dependent on the amount of booked travelers. If you are going to use one of the government company bus services you should look for the buses that have been given the seal 99 which means it has passed all of the checks for cleanliness and punctuation.
You may contact us to schedule your travel plans or check the bus schedules for the three Bangkok bus terminals here:
Mochit terminal (The north and Northeast terminal) For the northern line 0 – 2936 – 3670 For the Northeastern 0 – 2936 - 3670 For central line 0 – 2537 - 8055 Sai Tai terminal (the Southern line) 0 - 2434-7192, 0 - 2435-5605 Ekamai terminal (the East line terminal) 0 – 2391 – 6846 www.transport.co.th
Bangkok Bus Private terminal service:
This service is run by privately owned companies. Each bus line goes right to the travel destination for instance Phuket, Pattaya, Koa Samui, Koa Tao, Chiang Mai, and Seam reap (Angkor Wat). Your first thought would be this is great a direct route to my destination. Well, it is and it isn't.
First, these companies are not concession by the government for the eligible routes.
Second, by Thai law the bus must have insurance but that doesn't mean it has to cover the passengers so the standard of service will vary.
Third, there have been reports of stolen or open luggage.
We are not suggesting you do not use the private companies as many of them are very good. We only suggest that when you are going to choose a private company choose it wisely and not under a tight time frame. If you would like to use the private companies contact us and we will arrange a proper and professional company to manage your Bangkok tour or a Thailand tour.
