Mentioning Thailand to some foreigners immediately brings forth images if Claire Danes and Kate Beckensdale behind bars for illegally smuggling narcotics in Broke down Palace. While of course there is nothing to fear should you not be involved in illegal drug activity, we do want to make you well aware of the situation prior to coming to Bangkok.
Drugs in Bangkok : Punishment
Smuggling drugs are a crime punishable with sentences up to life imprisonment and in some cases even death. The reality is, however, many western countries are able to lighten the sentence by making diplomatic arrangements with the Thai government. Usually the agreement worked out is that the guilty party remain under Thai custody for a period of time typically no more than ten years, and normally no less than five years, before being transferred to detention within his or her own country. The guilty party will then spend additional time imprisoned according to the home country's own laws. However, it must be noted that no country is required to assist their citizens when imprisoned for criminal behavior abroad. In fact, countries such as South Africa are known for lack of assistance regarding its citizens in Thai prisons.
Drugs in Bangkok : Government policy and acts
In 2003, Thai Prime Minister Thaksin began is “War on Drugs” campaign. This campaign was designed to reduce drug trafficking and drug use throughout the country. Under this project, heightened measures and routine drug checks have been implemented. If you are big into the nightlife scene, there is a slight chance you will witness a drug raid. The systematic procedure is to lock all club-goers into the club and a producing a urine sample is mandatory before exiting the club. We don't want to tell you this to make you afraid, but rather only to make you an informed tourist. In reality the drug raid is no big deal, and in fact many westerners enjoy the excitement and a good story to bring home!
