Damnoen Saduak Floating Market

By Guide Eng

I remember my first visit to the Damnoen Saduak Floating Market with my friends some ten years ago. Back then, I had no clue that my current career path would be linked with this market so closely.

As a tour guide, I need to visit this place very often, and every time I get a different impression. It depends on several factors such as the weather, the attitude of my clients, who I meet and what I eat during the visit and much more.

Floating Market Trip when the Tourist Guide was a Tourist

Many people say that the first experience of your adventure is the most exiting and memorable one. Therefore, I will try my best to recall my first impressions of the Floating Market and use my experience from work to give a guideline as to what should you do when you are visiting there.

My friends and I took a ride to the Floating Market. As a Thai tourist, our major concern was about what to eat. We started and ended the tour with several dishes.

After walking into the market, we were amazed to see a big crowd of Thai and foreign visitors who had arrived before us (we were there at 7.30 p.m.). There were boats stacked with products to sell. Some boats had 5 to 6 people who looked like visitors, sight seeing by boat. Some boats had one person on the boat, looking as though he or she was there for shopping.

We also found many shops selling things on the boat and on the bank of the canal. I had rice porridge with pork. I sat on a very low chair, my one hand carrying a bowl, because the restaurant had no table!

Then, our group decided to take a roller boat ride along the canal for 30 minutes. The boat stopped, and I had another dish of noodle on the boat. The boat went along the narrow canal to get to the farming area. I remember the beauty of the green fields, making the noodle taste all the more delicious than the noodle in Bangkok.

Our group spent about two and a half hours before going back home. I returned with a fabulous impression of my trip, especially having very much enjoyed the food.

Tourist Guide's Recommendation

Now, I visit the Floating Market very often. My experience tells me that visitors should not drive to the market. Instead they should take a small tour boat to see the local way of living, and the plantation farm before entering the market by boat.

Visitors should also experience all kinds of food which are available in the market during their trip. My recommendation would be the noodle dish, which the Thais call Koay Teaw Haeng, and rice porridge. My favorite snacks are deep fry banana and Kui Chai tod, Chinese pancake stuffed with vegetable or taro, which are sold by very old Chinese ladies on the boat.

I would also recommend a famous Thai dessert called Chao Kouy. It is similar to jelly in black color. Chau Kouy is normally eaten with ice and sugar syrup.

As for recommend local fruits, you should try coconut juice and pamelo, which tastes like grapes.

By reading my article and viewing the photographs, you probably get a clear picture of the Floating Market. However, as wise men in Thai said, "Sip pak wa mai toa ta hean," which means what 10 people say is not equal to what you have seen by yourself. Therefore, I would like to recommend you to visit the Floating Market, have fun with plenty of food, and enjoy the boat ride and the way of living of the Damnoen Saduak people.
