Joe Louis puppet show

Puppet history in Siam

Puppet shows were the royal entertainment of the Siam royal court since the Ayutthaya kingdom period. In an early Bangkok era during King Rama II, the big royal cerebrations needed to have puppet show performances. It was conducted by Krom Hoon, “one of the royal office departments specializing in entertainment”. During that period, one dancer performed with a puppet. The puppet was about 1 meter tall.

Kru Kea and Jo Louis Puppet

In the reign of the King Rama IV , Kru Kea , the puppet folk master, created beautiful and sophisticated puppets to imitate the gestures and movements of real humans. Before he passed away he destroyed over 100 of the puppets but he gave 30 puppets to his daughter in law. It was very common practice for Thai ancestors to destroy or die with their knowledge. Luckily, part of that knowledge and puppets were passed as a legacy to the founder of the Joe Louis puppet Theater(Mr. Louis or Sathorn Yongkeawsod).

Thai Puppet performance

puppet show Joe Louis

To be able to perform puppet shows, they need basic traditional Thai dance skill which is called Khon. The performer needs to learn about each gesture and express the feeling on their face and in their movements. Team work is also very important because one puppet needs 3 dancers to control. To master the art, it takes the performer 3 years of learning. In addition to this, many practice sessions for at least a month before performances with other dancers.

Why should you visit this puppet theater?

It is not only your chance to see the beauty but also the rareness of the performance at the Joe Louis Theater. You are also a part of preserving the Thai art since this is the only puppet theater left. Many people say traditional dance is boring but this puppet show is not, as it picks up a very interesting story of Ramakian or legend to perform and they also have an interaction between the puppet and the audience near the end. Your night in Bangkok should be really memorable if you come to see this performance.
