Loy Krathong Festival
“Loy Krathong” is traditional festival during the full moon night of the 12 lunar month (Thai calendar), which usually falls on some day in November. The floating of a Krathong is made from banana leaf decorated with candles, incense and flowers. Thai people believe that this will float away all the bad luck as well as to express apologies to Pra mae Khongkha or Ganga, the River Goddess.
This is a fun festival for kids and young teen. When the time comes to floating the Krathong, everyone has got their beautiful Krathong with candles, coins, incense sticks, lit the candles together and prayed for good luck and floated the Krathong on the water, meant to fly grief and bad luck away.
Remarkable Place to Celebrate the Loy Krathong
Sukhothai : “Pao thean lien fai festival”
This is the original place of Loi Krathong festival. The legend said that a noble lady called Nang Noppamas, a consort of the King of Sukhothai, made the first decorated krathong as a gift for the king.The story goes on to say that the king lit the candle and the incense sticks and floated the krathong on one of the waterways that surrounded the city of Sukhothai.
However, to be here at this festival is unforgettable night with fire work. The dance and performance organize by Fine art department is very enjoyable. There is also the “Nang Noppamas beauty contest” in a traditional Thai custom.
Chiang Mai : “Yipeng Festival” (The Lantern Festival)
The biggest “Yi Peng” celebration happens in Chiang Mai because that was the ancient capital of the former Lanna kingdom, in which Yi Peng originated.Yipeng and Loy Krathong are held on the same day. People will release beautiful lanterns into the sky all over Chinag Mai because they believed that doing this, all the bad luck will blow away with the lantern, and also people like to make a wish before releasing it.
Phuket: Patong
At Patong beach, there is the “Krathong” sale on the street. Many Thai couple goes to ocean to float their Krathong. It is unlike other place that floats Krathong on the river or the pond. However, visitor will enjoy nice breeze at night and perhaps see hot air balloons as well.
Bangkok
Bangkok people go to many places for Loy Krathong festival. At Tak Sin BTS station is always busy as well as Kasetsart and Chula long korn University where family and friends get together at night for this celebration. The best celebration in town is “Phu Koa Thong” also known as the golden temple. There are many of games such as riding on the round tank by motorcycle, woman and snake show, lady in the water tank and many more that are rare to see. Hundreds of food stall that you can taste while walking and enjoy the games.
