Thai food is a sharing meal. Everyone at the table or on the floor share all the dishes, it is similar to a set menu but shared by everyone. The dishes are portioned off onto individual plates; most dishes are eaten with rice to soften the flavor, particularly spicy dishes. In most informal settings, no serving spoons are used. Each individual uses his/her own spoon to take food from the communal dishes.

With the exception of noodle soups, Thai food is generally eaten with a fork and a spoon, rather than with chopsticks. The fork, held in the left hand, is used to shovel food into the spoon.
