After years of war and isolation, Laos is slowly opening to the outside world, but it retains its own quiet rhythm and charm. Laos is landlocked country with a total area of 236,800 square kilometers.  Almost 70% of Laos’ terrain is mountainous which makes Loas has wide range of plants and animals within natural environment. The re is the historical city of Luang Prabang, where watching as hundreds of saffron-robed monks move silently among centuries-old monasteries is as romantic a scene as you’ll experience anywhere in Asia. The United Nations has recently declared Luang Prabang, the ancient northern capital, a protected World Heritage Site. There are also so much to see in Laos ; the Plain of Jars in Xieng Khuang Province, the forested mountains of Northern Laos, the gothic limestone karsts around the backpacker-haven Vang Vieng and in the deep south, past the market town Pakse, is Si Phan Don (Four Thousand Islands), where the mighty Mekong spreads out and all the hammocks are taken.

  • The best time to visit Laos is between November and April. (except February till early  March due to slash and burn time of farmer around Luang prabang area)
  • The hot season from March to May is very dry and certain river trips are not possible

The Kip is the official currency of the Lao PDR and the following bank notes are currently in circulation: 500; 1,000; 2,000; 5,000; 10,000; 20,000 and 50,000 Kip. The best currencies to use when exchanging money are: US Dollars, Euros and Thai Baht. You can exchange your currency at the bank, airport, or at a foreign currency exchange office. However, we recommend you exchange money into Kip for 100-200 USD in order to make small purchase, tipping, and souvenir.

Visa card is the most common. Master Card and American Express are accepted at most banks in the larger towns (such as Vientiane and Luang Prabang), and  in the big hotels, restaurants and souvenir shops.
Early 2009, AMT is still rare to find  in Laung prabang. We only see one at Airport and at main street.  Therefore, it is better to have some cash with you.
